Shingi Munyeza and Wife Lose $85,000 Debt Case Against Former Seedco Exec

Shingi Munyeza, a prominent businessman, and his wife Wilma have lost a legal battle over an US$85,000 debt to former Seedco communications executive Merjury Mutemererwa.

The former Africa Sun CEO and his wife were accused of deliberately failing to repay the loan, which Mutemererwa stated she had funded using part of her severance package.

Despite multiple attempts to negotiate repayment, the Munyezas did not provide valid reasons, request a grace period, or propose a repayment plan, prompting Mutemererwa to take legal action.

The dispute was reported to authorities on March 3, 2023. Mutemererwa, who is grieving the loss of her only son, expressed her frustration and accused the couple of being deceitful and unkind.

She emphasized that the Munyezas should be held accountable to prevent others from being misled, hinting that the couple had exploited their social influence, particularly within church communities, to target unsuspecting individuals.

Harare High Court Judge David Mangota ruled in favor of Mutemererwa, ordering the Munyezas to repay US$100,000, which includes the original amount plus interest.

The couple is required to pay interest from February 1, 2023, until the debt is fully settled.

Shingi Munyeza, known for his outspoken nature, has a distinguished background in business and hospitality, including previous ownership of a high-end bar and restaurant.

He also benefits from inherited wealth, as his father Fredrick was a pioneering black businessman who owned a major swimming pool construction company that later diversified into tile manufacturing.

Munyeza has been involved in public disputes, including one with politician Mayor Wadyajena over noise pollution in their upscale Borrowdale Brook community in Harare.
