The remains of South African freedom fighters buried in Zimbabwe during the anti-apartheid struggle will soon be returned to their homeland.
These heroes, who played a crucial role in the regional effort to dismantle apartheid, found their final resting place in Zimbabwe, a country that supported many liberation movements across Southern Africa.
The repatriation is a significant gesture that highlights the deep historical ties between Zimbabwe and South Africa. Godfrey Nyaruwanga, an official from the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ), spoke about the importance of this move. He emphasized that the repatriation symbolizes the enduring unity between the two nations, bonded by their shared fight against colonialism.
Nyaruwanga noted that the process is more than a symbolic act. “It is a reminder that Zimbabwe and South Africa are one, united by history and sacrifice,” he said.

The exhumation involves several legal steps, including obtaining permits for exhumation and export, as well as ensuring the proper documentation from local authorities. Some graves might also contain historically significant artifacts or weapons.
The Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage (MoHACH) in Zimbabwe is overseeing the repatriation process, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (MoFAIT) is coordinating with South African authorities to ensure a smooth operation. Any potential delays will be communicated to South Africa, which is preparing to receive the remains.
The South African Defence Force will transport the remains on September 24, 2024. South Africa has expressed its deep appreciation for Zimbabwe’s support in honoring these fallen heroes.
