Tender Kingpin With Ramaphosa Family Ties Loses R325 Million Fortune in Asset Seizure

The glitz, glam and fast life of one of South Africa’s most notorious tender tycoons has come crashing down. The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) has swooped in on Hangwani Morgan Maumela, seizing jaw-dropping assets worth a staggering R325 million.

From luxury mansions and Lamborghinis to a flashy party boat, nothing was spared in the AFU’s crackdown.

Maumela, who is linked to President Cyril Ramaphosa through a previous marriage, allegedly raked in millions through shady tenders at Tembisa Hospital — irregularities first exposed by the late whistleblower Babita Deokaran, just weeks before she was gunned down in August 2021.

Despite their family connection, Ramaphosa has long distanced himself from Maumela, famously saying: “I don’t even know this gentleman.”

The Tembisa Tender Web

Investigations unearthed that 14 front companies linked to Maumela and his family cashed in at least R415 million from questionable Tembisa Hospital contracts.

Some of the companies reportedly:

The scandal has reignited outrage over how whistleblower Babita Deokaran’s warnings were ignored until after her death. Now, with the AFU circling, the once untouchable tender kingpin finds his empire of excess crumbling.

From popping champagne in Lambos to watching it all slip away — Maumela’s downfall is one for the books.
