IMAGINE someone eating 10.2 kgs of prime rib in just one sitting at a restaurant?
Well, tomorrow, at the Castle Lager National Braai Day in Harare, all the meat lovers out there will be taking their own shot at consuming large amounts of meat, although it’s unlikely anyone will match the record set by American woman Molly Schuyler, who devoured that amount in Milwaukee. According to the Guinness World Records, that’s the most meat eaten by one person at a single sitting.
How much meat can one person handle in one go? It’s safe to say most of us won’t come close to Schuyler’s feat.
But one thing is certain: Zimbabweans love their meat. And tomorrow at Old Hararians Sports Club, a whole lot of it will be grilled and eaten as the city celebrates its annual meat feast – the Castle Lager National Braai Day.
In addition to the mountains of meat, plenty of alcohol will be flowing, and music will fill the air, creating the perfect vibe for a fun-filled day in the capital.
“We have our challenges as Zimbabweans, and things like last season’s drought didn’t help,” said Max Musoni, who was at Old Hararians earlier today, as preparations for the big day were underway. “But we are resilient, and when the chance comes for us to enjoy ourselves, we really go all out. This is one of those days where you see Zimbabweans at their best.”
Musoni mentioned that the weather has been a bit chilly lately, which could impact the turnout. “This is the kind of party where we need warm weather and sunshine. But even if it rains, trust me, people will still be out there having fun.”
The question is, how much meat will be eaten tomorrow?
Back in 2016, when the event was held at Alex Sports Club, the target was 15,000 kgs of meat, but in the end, 12,680 kgs were consumed. The following year, they hit the goal, with 15,000 kgs grilled and enjoyed by the crowd.
And it’s not just about feas
ting. The organisers have a tradition of giving back. For every kilogram of meat consumed, Castle Lager donates the equivalent amount to hospitals. In previous years, Mpilo General Hospital in Bulawayo and Sally Mugabe Hospital in Harare benefitted from these donations.
The idea behind this event is deeply rooted in the country’s culture of braaing, beer drinking, and enjoying good music. Castle Lager, the flagship beer brand of Delta Beverages, wanted to give braai lovers a platform to gather, share a good time, and set new records in meat consumption.
This year, there’s an exciting lineup of entertainers. South African dancer and singer Kamo Mphela, famous for hits like “Dali” and “Nkulunkulu,” will be headlining the festival. After taking a short break to focus on her mental health, Mphela is back and ready to deliver her best performance tomorrow. She’ll be sharing the stage with local stars like Master H, Saintfloew, and the ever-popular Winky D.
So get ready for a day of great vibes, fantastic music, and plenty of meat. The Castle Lager National Braai Day kicks off tomorrow at Old Hararians, and it’s set to be a party to remember.
