Legendary musician Thomas Mapfumo has made headlines once again, this time for turning down a generous offer from controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo.
In a recent interview with the Voice of America (Shona), Mapfumo was asked about rumors that he was offered a house worth 300,000 dollars and a car valued at 200,000 dollars if he were to join the ruling party, ZANU PF. In a firm and resolute response, Mapfumo made it clear that he had no interest in such offerings, citing the ongoing hardships faced by the people of Zimbabwe.

Mapfumo’s decision to reject the offer comes on the heels of a viral video where he criticized celebrities who had accepted gifts, including cars, from Chivayo. In the video, he suggested that these individuals were swayed by the allure of luxury items they could not afford on their own.

One such celebrity mentioned in Mapfumo’s critique was popular musician Jah Prayzah, who publicly thanked Chivayo for a car gift. Mapfumo’s commentary on the matter sparked further attention, leading Chivayo to extend an offer to Mapfumo as well. However, Mapfumo’s principled stance against accepting gifts under such circumstances remained unwavering.
Chivayo, in response, expressed a desire for Thomas Mapfumo to issue a public apology before reconsidering the offer of the car and house. This exchange has reignited discussions about the relationship between celebrities, business figures, and political affiliations in Zimbabwe’s cultural landscape.
