THOUSANDS OF JAPANESE VOLUNTEERS WORK IN ZIMBABWE

About 550 volunteers from Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) are in the nation to assist in the development of human resource capacity in a variety of areas, including education.

For the past 33 years, the JOCV project has placed Japanese people in disciplines such as academia, agriculture, ICT, vocational training, and sports.

JOCV is a project of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) that intends to give technical support to developing nations in order to aid in their social and economic development.

The Covid-19 epidemic has reduced the number of volunteers, but JICA anticipates that it will quadruple in the future.

Since the first dispatch in 1965, over 54 000 volunteers have been dispatched to nearly all developing countries and in more than 160 technical fields.

JICA country representative, Shigeki Furuta, said the project will benefit the two countries.

“They are transferring skills to the people, but not only that because they learn Zimbabwean culture and take it to Japan,” he said.
