Three officials from the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) have been brought before the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court, facing allegations of criminal abuse of office.
The accused individuals, namely Gerald Chitete, Silas Mabaso Zamba, and Daniel Mhlanga, were each granted bail set at US$200 and remanded until 27 March 2024.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the charges stem from an incident on 02 February of the current year. During this time, the trio was tasked with conducting examinations for student drivers, both through yard and road tests.

However, it is alleged that they unlawfully favored an applicant learner driver named Linda Rwauya. The accusation suggests that they granted Rwauya a class 4 driver’s license without her having undergone the required testing procedures. Such actions are deemed contrary to their responsibilities as public officials.
The issue came to light following a tip-off from a whistleblower, prompting authorities to launch an investigation that ultimately led to the arrest of the accused persons.
The case highlights concerns over the integrity of the examination process and raises questions about the adherence to proper protocols within the VID. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and uphold the standards of public service.
