A tragic incident occurred on October 14, 2024, when a group of crocodiles capsized a canoe on the Zambezi River, resulting in the death of a fisherman.
According to reports from Chronicle, a woman who was nearby collecting water witnessed the attack. The crocodiles allegedly pulled the man, who was screaming, under the water, and despite attempts by officials from Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife and the sub-aqua police unit, his body could not be retrieved.
Police in Binga, Matabeleland North, are currently investigating the situation, which unfolded around 6 PM. Inspector Glory Banda, the spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Matabeleland North, confirmed that the victim’s body has yet to be found.

After receiving a tip-off, police, sub-aqua units, and rangers from the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority responded to the scene and observed crocodiles in the vicinity.
Inspector Banda advised the public to refrain from using unsafe canoes for fishing and to be cautious when crossing rivers, especially as the rainy season approaches. He highlighted the increased likelihood of crocodile attacks during this time and emphasized the importance of safety measures for individuals who regularly navigate waterways.
