The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) aim to attract and keep top doctoral students and make Canada a leading center for research.
These scholarships support students pursuing a doctoral degree, or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD programs.
Host Institution: Canadian universities with Vanier CGS nominations. The scholarship can only be used at the institution that nominated the student.
Fields of Study:
- PhD programs in health research, natural sciences and engineering, or social sciences and humanities
- Joint programs like MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, if they have a major research component
Number of Scholarships: Up to 166 scholarships are awarded each year.

Scholarship Value/Duration:
- $50,000 per year for three years
Eligibility:
- Must be nominated by a Canadian institution with a Vanier CGS quota
- Must be pursuing a first doctoral degree (including combined degrees with significant research)
- Must plan to start full-time doctoral studies at the nominating institution in the next academic year
- Must have completed no more than 20 months of doctoral studies by 1 May 2025
- Must have a first-class average in the last two years of full-time study
- Cannot have held a doctoral-level scholarship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC
Application Instructions:
- Candidates must be nominated by a Canadian institution; they cannot apply directly
- Inform the chosen institution or wait for them to contact you about the nomination process
- Submit the application via the ResearchNet system to the nominating institution by their internal deadline
- The institution will send nominations to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat by 30 October 2024
