Three officials from the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) have found themselves in hot water after allegedly granting a class four driver’s licence to an individual without her undergoing the necessary testing procedures.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) revealed that Gerald Chitete, Silas Mabaso Zamba, and Doniel Mhlanga, all employed by the VID, appeared before the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court facing charges of criminal abuse of office.
According to the statement issued by NPAZ, the trio, entrusted with the responsibility of conducting examinations for student drivers, purportedly showed undue favoritism towards an applicant, Linda Rwauya. They allegedly issued her a class 4 driver’s licence without her completing the required testing procedures, a blatant violation of their duties as public officials.
The investigation into the matter was initiated after a whistle-blower alerted the authorities to the irregularities. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of the accused trio.
Chitete, Zamba, and Mhlanga were granted bail set at US$200 each. The case has been adjourned until the 27th of March 2024.
