A group of war veterans has called for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to step down, criticizing his leadership and stating that he is “unfit to lead the country,” according to ZimLive.
During a press conference in Harare on Sunday, January 26, Blessed Runesu Geza, a war veteran and member of the ZANU PF central committee, harshly criticized Mnangagwa’s administration. He suggested the group may be speaking on behalf of a military faction within the ruling party. Geza, who was joined by five others he introduced as former ZPRA and ZANLA commanders, said the president had failed the nation and should peacefully relinquish power.
“It is clear to us that Mnangagwa has failed. He is not fit to run this country, and his time is up,” Geza stated. “We ask him to go peacefully. If he does not heed this call, the people of Zimbabwe will have to address the issue according to the constitution.”
After Geza’s remarks, war veteran Knox Chivero declared that it was time for Mnangagwa to step down “peacefully or otherwise.” The group also expressed strong opposition to any amendments to the Constitution and rejected Mnangagwa’s statements that he would not seek power beyond 2028. Geza warned that any such efforts would destabilize the country.
He further criticized Mnangagwa’s leadership, claiming that instead of addressing the mistakes of former President Robert Mugabe, Mnangagwa had proven to be a continuation of Mugabe’s policies. Geza alleged that Mnangagwa had systematically sidelined war veterans, replacing them with corrupt individuals, and filled his cabinet with loyalists who benefited personally from his power.
“Mnangagwa has neglected civil servants, who now earn pitiful wages. Our men and women in uniform have lost their dignity due to state-enforced poverty,” Geza said. He also raised concerns about the increasing number of deaths among former generals, suggesting they might be linked to Owen Mudha Ncube, a prominent political figure and ally of Mnangagwa.
Geza’s remarks highlighted deep dissatisfaction among war veterans with Mnangagwa’s leadership and the direction of the country under his rule.
