The opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has accused the Zimbabwean government of widespread corruption, rent-seeking behavior, and the exploitation of state resources, citing the case of controversial tender entrepreneur Wicknell Chivhayo as an example of the government’s reluctance to address corruption.
A letter dated June 16 from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) summoned controversial business partners Mike Chimombe, Moses Mpofu, and Chivhayo for questioning over leaked audios allegedly linked to Chivhayo.
These recordings raised concerns about money laundering and abuse of office, issues under ZACC’s jurisdiction. However, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have shown little interest in pursuing Chivhayo.

Only Chimombe and Mpofu appeared before ZACC, were denied bail, and are currently in remand prison.
CCC spokesperson Promise Mkwananzi claimed that the government is the main perpetrator of ongoing corruption, awarding tenders to undeserving and corrupt individuals.
Mkwananzi criticized the government for its involvement in corruption, rent-seeking, and the plundering of state resources, granting lucrative contracts to their associates and cronies.
Regarding Chivhayo, Mkwananzi noted that despite being implicated in several high-profile scandals, he remains free and boastful of his untouchability. Mkwananzi called on the public to report, expose, and condemn corruption wherever it appears.
Mkwananzi further alleged that the distribution of national resources, including food aid, has been politicized, favoring the regime’s party members.
This, he argued, is a root cause of the national economy’s failure and regression, driving millions into poverty and starvation.
He highlighted the example of the late Mboneni Ncube’s family, who have been repeatedly denied food aid after Ncube was murdered by suspected Zanu PF activists at an opposition rally in Kwekwe.
