ZANU PF Leaders Disappointed as Party Declines Free Fuel and Accommodation for Independence Day Celebrations
High-ranking members of ZANU PF expressed disappointment when the party declined to provide them with complimentary fuel and accommodation for the Independence Day festivities held at Murambinda growth point in Buhera, Manicaland province this year.
Historically, central committee members of the ruling party have received various privileges during national events, including free fuel and lodging.
NewsDay obtained a message sent to central committee members from ZANU PF’s national headquarters through the party’s provincial offices ahead of yesterday’s Independence Day celebrations.
“Central committee members are advised by the national transport department that there won’t be accommodation, fuel or bus fare refunds.
“Those willing to attend national events shall take advantage of the buses allocated to the province. Liaise with local district co-ordinators for pick-up points and routes,” the message read.
On the contrary, ZANU PF’s Director of Information, Farai Marapira, mentioned that there could have been an oversight or “glitch” leading to the lack of fuel and accommodation arrangements for the party’s prominent members.
“The party has always looked after its leadership. As with any programme a glitch may be here and there but not failure. We are not a party that fails its cadres.
“All central committee members and all other members are catered for professionally and fully,” he said.
According to insiders within the party as reported by NewsDay, the decision was attributed to financial limitations and the necessity to prioritize more critical matters. Zimbabwe has been wrestling with economic difficulties, such as hyperinflation, high unemployment rates, and a severe shortage of foreign currency, which have strained the government’s financial resources.
While some perceive this move as a step toward fiscal prudence and transparency, others see it as a letdown for dedicated ZANU PF supporters who have remained loyal through challenging times.
Central committee members, speaking anonymously to NewsDay, expressed a sense of betrayal, considering their efforts in securing the party’s victory in last year’s elections. ZANU PF leaders are known for their opulent lifestyles, a stark contrast to the widespread poverty experienced by the majority of the population.

A report presented to the 7th ZANU PF National People’s Conference last year revealed extensive spending by the ruling party. Before the ousting of the late former President Robert Mugabe in 2017, the party had only 45 vehicles. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has since expanded the fleet to 531, marking the largest fleet in ZANU PF’s history.
The central committee report further disclosed that from January to September last year, ZANU PF allocated ZWL$1.8 billion and over US$4.8 million towards staff salaries, benefits, transportation, healthcare, and allowances for party leaders, among other expenditures.
