Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Tatenda Mavetera, has outlined an ambitious vision for Zimbabwe’s technological future—one where innovation drives economic growth, empowers citizens, and establishes the country as a leader in the global digital economy.
Speaking at the Zimbabwe Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Innovation Week held at the University of Zimbabwe, Minister Mavetera emphasized the transformative power of technology and the critical role of robust digital infrastructure.
The event, co-hosted by the Government of Zimbabwe and supported by funding from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), operated under the theme: “Building Digital Infrastructure: Enabling Innovation and Connectivity in Zimbabwe’s Digital Economy.”
Minister Mavetera highlighted that Zimbabwe’s digital economy is no longer just a concept but a vital component of everyday life.
“We envision a future where technology empowers our people and drives economic growth,” she said. “Artificial intelligence, in particular, is a game-changer that can improve efficiency and unlock new opportunities.”
She stressed the importance of digital infrastructure as the foundation of this transformation. “It is the backbone that supports our digital economy, enabling seamless communication and innovation that addresses our most pressing challenges.”
Minister Mavetera noted Zimbabwe’s strides in developing its digital landscape. By 2024, the country’s internet penetration has reached approximately 78.55%, with mobile penetration exceeding 96%.
Two of the three licensed mobile network operators now offer 5G connectivity, while the introduction of Low Earth Satellites further enhances connectivity options, expanding access to rural and remote areas.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Professor Amon Murwira, spoke on AI’s ability to revolutionize market access and customer engagement.
“Zimbabwe is part of a new economy that promotes prosperity and peace globally,” he stated. “We will use AI to enhance customer engagement and drive targeted advertising campaigns, gaining deeper insights into consumer behaviour.”
Prof. Murwira also stressed the importance of integrating Zimbabwean products into global markets by training AI systems to recognize and promote local goods.
Minister of Youth Empowerment, Development, and Vocational Training, Tino Machakaire, emphasized Africa’s role in the digital innovation revolution.
“AI and innovation are now realities. Our vision is to cultivate a generation of young innovators who drive inclusive growth and sustainable development,” he said, pledging the Ministry’s commitment to fostering an environment that supports youth creativity and entrepreneurship.
Dr. Willie Ganda, speaking on behalf of Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science, and Technology Development, Dr. Frederick Shava, underscored the role of education in integrating AI into society.
“Our higher education institutions are not only integrators of ground-breaking ideas, but also laboratories for innovation,” he remarked. AI has been embedded into various academic programmes to ensure graduates are prepared to lead in the digital economy.
