Two journalists from Zimpapers, Zimbabwe’s leading integrated media organization, earned top awards at the SADC Media Awards ceremony held during the 44th SADC Heads of State and Government Summit in Mt Hampden.

Debra Matabvu from The Sunday Mail secured the first prize in the print category for her article, “New-look road boon for SADC integration.” Her report explored the benefits of the upgraded Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge Road and the modernized Beitbridge Border Post on regional economic integration.

In the photography category, senior Zimpapers photographer Kudakwashe Hunda won first place for his compelling images of the renovated Beitbridge Border Post, emphasizing its role in enhancing trade between Zimbabwe, South Africa, and the wider African continent.

Matabvu expressed her appreciation for her colleagues and editors at The Sunday Mail. “This award reflects the influence of journalism in advancing regional development,” she said. “I am honored to highlight the impact of infrastructure improvements on SADC integration. This recognition is a testament to the collective effort of the Sunday Mail team. The developments on the Harare-Beitbridge Road and the Beitbridge Border Post are pivotal for the region, and I’m glad to have spotlighted their importance.”

Hunda also conveyed his gratitude, stating, “I appreciate SADC Chairperson President Mnangagwa for his Government’s commitment to development. The modernization of the Beitbridge Border Post is crucial for regional integration and has provided us with significant material to share impactful stories. I also thank Zimpapers, especially Mr. William Chikoto and the editorial team, as well as my family for their support.”
