The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has reported the seizure of goods worth around US$2.4 million as part of a coordinated operation aimed at tackling smuggling and unethical business practices among importers and cross-border transporters.
ZIMRA’s operation, which involved several agencies, led to the confiscation of numerous vehicles, including cross-border buses and haulage trucks, as well as illicit goods such as food items and second-hand clothing.
In an interview with The Sunday Mail, ZIMRA Commissioner-General Regina Chinamasa revealed that state warehouses are now at full capacity with the seized items. “We have confiscated goods valued at approximately ZiG46 242 385 (around US$1.8 million at the official exchange rate) and US$572,199,” Chinamasa stated.
The primary aim of the operation is to combat smuggling, encourage voluntary compliance with tax regulations, and promote ethical business practices. Chinamasa added that once compliance improves, the current controls will continue as part of ongoing risk management efforts.
The operation focuses on inspecting commercial and passenger vehicles along key cross-border trade routes, with an emphasis on identifying non-compliant importers and transporters. “ZIMRA’s operation is mainly targeting non-compliant importers, not transporters, as part of our fight against smuggling,” Chinamasa explained.
The crackdown has intensified in response to growing concerns about smuggling activities that undermine legitimate trade and jeopardize economic stability and public safety.
The Ministry of Industry and Commerce is leading the task force, which also includes the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), the Consumer Protection Commission, and other law enforcement bodies. To enforce compliance, 24-hour roadblocks have been set up on highways leading into major cities. Retailers are also subject to surprise inspections and must present documentation proving their stock was legally imported. Failure to comply with regulations could result in hefty fines and the confiscation of goods.
