The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has maintained that the armed robbery of US$4 million from an Ecobank branch in Bulawayo last Thursday was aided by insider information.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi revealed that police teams have been dispatched to Bulawayo to aid the ongoing investigation. He stated:
“We firmly believe that someone leaked details regarding the movement of the money, and we are interrogating all potential suspects.”
Nyathi assured the public that the investigation is progressing and that authorities are committed to uncovering the truth, leaving “no stone unturned.” He also urged the public to disregard misleading social media reports about the case, promising to provide official updates as necessary.
The heist took place just after 3 PM at the corner of Queen Lozikeyi Street and Simon Muzenda Avenue in Bulawayo’s city center. The suspects, driving a white Ford Ranger, carried out the robbery with precision.
Armed with pistols and a rifle, the seven men—disguised in face masks and bucket hats—swiftly overpowered guards from Safeguard security who were in the process of loading cash boxes into a vehicle.
The robbers completed the attack in just two minutes, fleeing with the stolen money.
