ZRP Links Majority of Cash-in-Transit Heists to “Inside Jobs”

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has revealed that most cash-in-transit (CIT) heists occurring nationwide are a result of “inside jobs,” where employees, either intentionally or inadvertently, furnish crucial intelligence to criminals.

ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi stated that investigations have consistently shown that numerous such robberies are facilitated by employees who divulge sensitive operational details. This sharing of information, he noted, can sometimes be deliberate, while at other times, individuals may not fully grasp the repercussions of their actions.

Commissioner Nyathi highlighted that this pattern of betrayal is particularly prevalent in companies dealing with substantial cash volumes, where the temptation to leak information can be significant. He remarked, “Companies such as those involved in Cash-In-Transit (CIT) operations, banks, supermarkets and mines are particularly at risk of losing substantial amounts of money.”

According to Nyathi, the primary sources of these sensitive information leaks are frequently employees of security firms. To mitigate this risk, he advised, “To avoid hiring individuals with criminal tendencies, these companies must carry out thorough background checks. It is, therefore, the responsibility of each company to ensure that all employees are properly vetted to prevent criminal activity.”

He also emphasized the importance of “Routine or impromptu staff reshuffling,” as it “prevents employees from becoming too comfortable in one role, which could lead to the leaking of sensitive information.” Commissioner Nyathi warned that anyone found to have shared information that aids a heist can face charges and a prison sentence.

Acknowledging the complexities of these cases, Nyathi noted that employee complicity can be either knowing or unintentional. He explained, “While some are driven by greed, others may not fully understand the implications of their actions. As we assess this trend, it’s important to recognise the human element and to respond with both empathy and vigilance.” He added that by understanding the vulnerabilities contributing to insider crimes, a safer and more trustworthy environment can be established for all.

In a recent development, the ZRP confirmed on Sunday the arrest of the Vumbunu brothers in South Africa in connection with the US$4 million Ecobank cash heist. The dramatic apprehension of Abraham and Elijah Temayi Vumbunu has reignited public interest in the high-profile case, which has captivated the nation since the robbery in 2024.

When questioned about their extradition, Commissioner Nyathi confirmed that the process is currently underway, though he cautioned that it requires patience due to the involvement of legal and diplomatic procedures.
