Dzivarasekwa, Harare | Over 200 babies were delivered on Christmas Day at the country’s major hospitals in Harare, Bulawayo, and Chitungwiza.

Sally Mugabe Central Hospital welcomed 54 newborns, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals recorded 42 deliveries, and Chitungwiza Central Hospital reported 24 births.

In Bulawayo, United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) celebrated the arrival of 26 babies—13 boys and 13 girls—while Mpilo Central Hospital delivered 20 babies, including 13 girls and seven boys. Across these hospitals, there was a slight majority of girls born on the festive day.

Sally Mugabe Central Hospital’s senior nursing officer, Mrs. Ruth Rukarwa, confirmed the hospital had 54 live births but sadly reported one loss.

“We had 54 live births but unfortunately lost one baby,” she explained. “Out of the 55, there were 28 baby girls and 27 baby boys. Most deliveries, 45 in total, were normal vertex deliveries, while nine were through Caesarean sections.”

Mrs. Rukarwa also noted that two teenage mothers gave birth safely on Christmas Day.

“We had three live births from teenage mothers, including a boy and a girl born to 17-year-old mothers, and a baby girl delivered by a 15-year-old mother,” she added.

Several mothers expressed their joy at giving birth on such a significant day. One of the mothers, Mrs. Felistas Mbakureya, who delivered at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, shared her happiness: “I am very happy to give birth to my first-born daughter on the day our Lord Jesus Christ was born.”

City of Harare maternity clinics across the capital also recorded 50 births, consisting of 26 girls and 24 boys. The first Christmas baby at the city clinics was born at 12:05 am at Budiriro Polyclinic, while Rujeko Polyclinic in Dzivarasekwa welcomed a set of twin girls.
