2024 Kariba Water Allocation For Electricity Generation Slashed By 47%
Kariba | Water authorised for power generation at the Kariba Dam has been cut by 47% by the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA), from 30 billion cubic metres (BCM) to 16 BCM.
ZRA recently released a statement stating that low water levels in the largest artificial lake and the expected normal to below normal rainfall season in portions of Kariba’s catchment region in 2023 and 2024 were the reasons behind the reduction in the quantity of water allocated for electricity generation in 2024.
Starting this week, the allocation for the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC), a ZESA power generating unit, and the Zambia Electricity Supply Authority (ZESCO) would be reduced from the current 15 BCM to 8 BCM each.
ZPC operates the Kariba South Hydroelectric Power Station and ZESCO manages the Kariba North Bank Power Station. Said ZRA:
ZRA hereby announces that it has allocated 16 BCM of water to be shared equally between the two power utilities (ZESCO and ZPC) for their power generation operations at Kariba for the year 2024.
