6,000 Arrested in Anti-Drug Campaign

The Zimbabwean government has launched a robust anti-drug campaign resulting in the arrest of over 6,000 suspects since the start of the year. This crackdown on drug-related activities underscores the government’s commitment to tackling a pressing societal issue.

Cabinet’s recent approval of the principles for the Zimbabwe Drug and Substance Agency Bill, 2024 marks a pivotal step in bolstering the nation’s anti-drug initiatives. The bill sets the stage for the establishment of a specialized Security Service and a dedicated Drug and Substance Elimination Agency, which will work in tandem as part of the National Drug Agency.

During the post-Cabinet briefing, Dr. Jenfan Muswere, the Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services, emphasized the government’s serious approach to combating drug abuse. Dr. Muswere highlighted that nationwide efforts included 311 inspections of medicine outlets, resulting in the confiscation of 62 lines of illicit medicines.

“Since January 2024, about 6 148 people were arrested, 677 were suppliers and 5 471 were end-users.

“A total of 106 illegal drug and substance trading bases were identified, raided and destroyed in Harare, Shamva, Chinhoyi, Bindura, Bulawayo and Mutare.

“51 liquor outlets were charged for operating without the correct licences , while 268 operators were also arrested for violating license conditions and 17 outlets had their licenses canceled for violating operating conditions.”

Furthermore, the approval of the Zimbabwe Multi-Sectoral Drug and Substance Abuse Plan 2024-2030 outlines a comprehensive strategy aimed at addressing the escalating threat posed by drug and substance abuse. The plan’s strategic approach encompasses public health, economic growth, national security, and social stability, reflecting the government’s holistic approach to combating this multifaceted challenge.

“Awareness campaigns on drug and substance abuse are being accelerated targeting adults, youths, and children.

“The Youth Service in Zimbabwe training programme will start in June 2024 at Dadaya and Vumba Training Centres.

“In addition, as a key measure to reduce indulgence, ensuring financial inclusivity is being heightened and a total of US$20 000 has been loaned to youths across the country for income-generating projects through the Empower Bank.”

With these concerted efforts and legislative frameworks in place, Zimbabwe is poised to strengthen its fight against drug abuse, safeguard public health, and promote societal well-being. The coordinated actions underscore a proactive stance aimed at curbing the detrimental effects of drug-related activities on the nation’s progress and prosperity.

“Establishment of outpatient Psycho (1) Social Support Centres and parenting groups countrywide as well as the purchase of psychotropic medicines and food provisions for rehabilitation centers will be expedited,” said Dr Muswere.

“Drug and Substance Abuse has become a threat to economic development, social harmony, health and wellbeing, public order and security.”
