Harare, Zimbabwe – An accounts clerk with M.A Auto Suppliers, Lorraine Mawema, has appeared in court on allegations of stealing US$3,500 from her company.
Mawema recently stood before Harare magistrate, Ms. Lynne Chinzou, facing charges of theft of trust property. She was remanded out of custody, with her trial set to commence on July 24.
The complainant in this case is M.A Auto Suppliers, represented by its finance manager, Vellah Christine. According to Prosecutor Mr. Tinotenda Masimba, the incident occurred on June 24 around 8 a.m. when Christine instructed Mawema to remit all the cash in her custody.

However, Mawema continuously delayed in handing over the money.
The court heard that Mawema eventually went to Christine’s office and confessed to having used the US$3,500 to purchase a car. This confession led Christine to report the matter to Marlborough Police Station, resulting in Mawema’s arrest. Unfortunately, none of the stolen money has been recovered.
As the trial date approaches, the case highlights the importance of trust and accountability in financial management roles within companies.
