A Grade 1 teacher, convicted of assaulting a six-year-old pupil with a blackboard ruler, has become a contentious figure at St Martin’s Convent Primary School in Harare.
The young pupil, who has a speech impediment and whose identity is protected due to their age, was beaten for failing to answer questions during class. The assault left the child with injuries to his right eye, although he has since recovered.
The teacher, identified as Audrey Bayana, was found guilty of the assault and sentenced by a Mbare Magistrate to four months in prison. However, she avoided jail by paying a fine of US$200.
Despite the severity of the incident, the school’s administration has not taken any action against Bayana, sparking outrage among some parents. They argue that the lack of disciplinary measures from the school creates an impression that such violent behavior is tolerated, even though it is illegal under the law.
“This teacher assaulted a Grade 1 child, yet the school did nothing about it. She is back at the school and is even advocating for parents struggling to pay fees to be referred to debt collectors,” said a concerned parent, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The school authorities need to address this issue before we take further steps.”
Reports suggest that following the incident, Bayana and the school’s headmistress attempted to mediate with the pupil’s mother, urging her to resolve the matter privately without involving the police. However, the child’s mother, enraged by the assault, refused these overtures and insisted on pursuing legal action.
The case has divided opinions within the school community, with calls growing for the administration to address the situation and ensure the safety and well-being of pupils under their care.
