A horrific pile-up occurred this morning at the notorious Mabvuku Turnoff on the busy Mutare Road in Harare.
Mutare Road is among Zimbabwe’s most heavily trafficked routes, connecting some eastern suburbs of Harare, extending into Mashonaland East, and reaching Mutare and Mozambique. It accommodates a mix of private cars, kombis, long-distance buses, and heavy trucks all vying for space.
With several roads closed for rehabilitation ahead of the 44th SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government, the remaining open roads are experiencing increased traffic congestion, particularly during the morning rush hour.
Drivers, in their haste to reach work or take advantage of the peak hour, often refuse to yield at intersections, even when traffic lights are operational, such as at the Mabvuku Turnoff.

Although traffic lights were installed earlier this month by Mabvuku legislator Scott Sakupwanya in response to public demand, a severe accident still occurred this morning.
Images of the crash are circulating on social media, but the Zimbabwe Republic Police has yet to provide official details. The incident involved a Mercedes-Benz sedan that ended up on the roof of a Toyota Hilux GD6 truck, severely damaging the GD6. Additionally, an Isuzu truck had its driver’s side damaged and its windshield shattered.Other motorists halted their morning commute to witness and document the alarming scene.
