Artisanal Miner Fatally Shot by Security Guards at Chinese-Owned Mine in Old Mutare

Old Mutare, Zimbabwe – April 3, 2025 — Violence erupted at the Chinese-owned Sino Africa Huijin Mine in Premier Estate, Old Mutare, following the fatal shooting of a local artisanal miner by security guards on the night of April 2.

The deceased, identified as 32-year-old Alfred Dodzo, was reportedly shot three times in the head by mine security personnel. Witnesses allege that the guards opened fire without issuing a warning, killing Dodzo instantly. He had been accused of attempting to steal gold ore from the mining site.

Initial reports suggest the fatal shooting may be a case of homicide, though authorities are investigating whether it was a deliberate act or a response in self-defense. Police have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

In the aftermath of the shooting, outrage swept through the local community. Approximately 70 residents stormed the mine earlier today, retaliating against security staff. Several guards were injured during the unrest, and the mine’s manager, Daniel Panganai, was hospitalized after sustaining injuries in the attack.

The incident has intensified existing tensions between local artisanal miners and the mine’s management, raising serious concerns over security practices and relations between foreign-owned mining operations and surrounding communities.

Local leaders and residents are now demanding accountability and justice for Dodzo’s death. Civil society groups have also begun to call for an independent inquiry into the use of force by private security companies operating in extractive industries.

More details are expected as investigations unfold.
