Artists Laud Collin Mnangagwa’s Generosity at Shurugwi Event

Artists in Shurugwi District have hailed Collin Mnangagwa, son of Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa, for his financial support during the official handover of ZANU-PF offices in the district.

The gesture, seen by many as a boost to the local arts scene, saw artists who performed at the event receiving cash rewards ranging from US$100 for student performers to US$500 for seasoned professionals.

In total, about 15 artists participated in the event, leaving with their efforts not only recognized but tangibly rewarded. This is a departure from the common narrative of artist exploitation, where performers often go unpaid despite their contributions.

“I am humbled by the surprise kind of support,” said Brighton Mashazhu, a poet who performed at the event. “I had gone there to perform for free, but surprisingly, I’m now US$400 richer. This is a tip of the iceberg. Hopefully, local event organizers will emulate the good gesture.”

Another artist, choosing to remain anonymous, expressed disbelief at the initiative. “I am tongue-tied by the kind of support. Local artists are often used and dumped like used condoms, but the member of the first family has set an example that artworks are valuable business. Artists must be paid for their services and the time they spend crafting their work,” they said.

The impact of Collin Mnangagwa’s act was further emphasized by Mavis Koslek, Chairperson of Hodzeko Arts and Culture Association. She noted that such support has the potential to energize the creative community and foster an appreciation for cultural heritage.

“Such a magnitude of support, if allowed to continue in our district and province, has the power to release creative energy among both upcoming and seasoned artists. It helps them appreciate cultural heritage and cultivates rich interests they can pursue in their leisure and later in life,” Koslek said.

While some have speculated that Collin Mnangagwa’s gesture was politically motivated to garner support for his father’s ruling ZANU-PF party, others dismissed such claims. An opposition councillor, speaking on condition of anonymity, insisted that the event carried no political overtones.

“This had no political connotation. The young man is people-centred. His gesture today was genuine, apolitical, and non-partisan. Not even one artist was asked their political affiliation before receiving their token of appreciation after performing,” the councillor said.

The unprecedented show of generosity from a high-profile figure has set a new standard for how artists can be supported and valued. It has also sparked calls for more event organizers to adopt similar practices to ensure fair treatment of artists.

By recognizing the significance of the arts and providing tangible support, Collin Mnangagwa has not only left a lasting impression on Shurugwi’s artists but also reignited the conversation about the value of creative contributions in society.

Whether this will inspire broader change remains to be seen, but for now, the gesture has lit a beacon of hope in the local arts community.
