Beitbridge Child Electrocuted as ZETDC Workers Allegedly Mishandle Wiring

Zimbabwean government

A six-year-old girl was tragically electrocuted last week at her home in Beitbridge, reportedly in the presence of workers from the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC).

ZETDC, a subsidiary of the state-owned ZESA Holdings, is responsible for the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity in Zimbabwe.

According to *NewsDay*, Nothando Vurayayi was laid to rest in her home village near Sosera Halt, Bikita.

ZETDC covered the funeral costs, including the coffin, food, hearse, and transportation for mourners who traveled from Beitbridge to attend the burial.

When contacted for a statement, ZETDC’s stakeholder relations executive, Alaina Suliwa, refrained from sharing specific details regarding the company’s involvement. She stated that a thorough investigation was being conducted alongside other stakeholders and that more information would be released once the inquiry was complete.

A family member of the deceased confirmed that they had met with ZETDC officials, who agreed to cover all funeral expenses.

Reports suggest that ZETDC workers improperly connected an earth cable to a water tap. Nothando and a friend had approached the tap for a drink when the fatal incident occurred. When her friend attempted to pull her away, she was also shocked and thrown against a fence due to an electric current being used to test a faulty meter.

Following the accident, ZETDC workers tried to revive Nothando, who had recently started school, but were unsuccessful. She was then rushed to a doctor, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
