Body Cams and Name Tags Now Compulsory for All ZRP Officers

In a decisive move to restore public trust and modernize law enforcement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has implemented a strict new policy requiring every officer on active duty to wear visible name tags and body-worn cameras.

This directive is part of a broader technological overhaul within the force, which now includes the deployment of high-tech drones and sophisticated traffic surveillance tools designed to tackle shifting crime trends and improve road safety across the country.

Strict Accountability: No Camera, No Deployment

Speaking at the recent relaunch of the ZRP Client Service Charter, Police Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba made it clear that the era of anonymous policing is over. Under the new regulations, no officer will be cleared for duty without the necessary identification and recording equipment. This initiative is specifically designed to foster a culture of integrity and ensure that every interaction between the police and the public is documented.

Senior officials emphasized that these measures are central to the force’s commitment to professionalism, aiming to eliminate misconduct and enhance the credibility of the ZRP in the eyes of the citizens.

Advanced Tech Rollout: Drones and Speed Cameras

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that the procurement phase is complete and the equipment is already being integrated into daily operations. While the logistics of syncing force numbers with new name tags are being finalized, the technological rollout is already visible on the ground.

“The cameras have been acquired and are entering immediate use,” Commissioner Nyathi stated. “High-tech speed cameras are already active on our major highways, and our central stations in Harare and Bulawayo have successfully integrated drone surveillance into their crime prevention strategies.”

The introduction of automated speed enforcement is expected to have a life-saving impact. Authorities pointed to global data suggesting that such scientific monitoring can slash road accident rates by over 20%.

A New Era of Transparency

The primary goal of the body-worn cameras is to provide an indisputable audio-visual record of police encounters. By capturing real-time data, the ZRP hopes to:

  • Minimize public complaints and allegations of harassment.

  • Provide high-quality evidence for legal prosecutions.

  • Act as a deterrent against corruption and bribery.

  • Serve as a practical tool for internal training and reviews.

Commissioner-General Mutamba highlighted that while technology is a powerful ally, it must be supported by the core values of respect and impartiality. As the ZRP transitions into this digital-first approach, the focus remains on ensuring that modern tools complement traditional policing to create a safer Zimbabwe.
