A Harare man, Brown Rwafa (39), faced charges in court yesterday for allegedly robbing and raping women in maize fields in Westgate and Madokero.
Appearing before Harare regional magistrate Mr. Donald Ndirowei, Rwafa was charged with seven counts of robbery and six counts of rape. He was remanded in custody until March 21, with bail to be considered only by the High Court.
According to the State, on February 5, Brown Rwafa accosted a 26-year-old woman walking to Westgate shops through a maize field path. He demanded her Huawei Y9 phone, threatened her and her child with a knife, and then stole her handbag containing the phone, US$53, and other items worth US$273.

In another incident, an 18-year-old woman, accompanied by a child, was walking from Westgate shops to Westgate area D. Rwafa approached her, demanded her phone and cash, threatened her life, and took her iPhone XR and $2,000.
On September 30 last year, at the corner of Mama Mafuyane and David’s Way in Bluffhill, Harare, Rwafa allegedly grabbed a woman by the neck, stole US$20 and her phone, and then raped her in a nearby bushy area.
Similarly, on January 13, while a woman sought directions to Westgate from Rwafa, he purportedly led her into a bushy area, robbed her of her phone and cash, and raped her.
