Bruce Mugadhuwi, aged 32 and employed as a teacher at Commercial College in Mutare, recently appeared before the Mutare Magistrates’ Court, facing charges related to unlawfully writing Zimbabwe School Examination Council (ZIMSEC) examinations on behalf of students.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), on October 16, 2023, two students, Shellington Brown and Mirriam Maposa, sat for a ZIMSEC Mathematics examination at Commercial College. Unbeknownst to examiners, they had clandestinely arranged with Mugadhuwi for him to write the exam on their behalf. Both students participated in the exam as planned.
Upon completion of the exam, Mugadhuwi illicitly replaced the students’ original answer sheets with ones he had prepared himself. He had received US$380 from Shellington Brown and US$300 from Mirriam Maposa for this service.

The fraudulent scheme went undetected until January 2024, when ZIMSEC released the exam results. Shellington Brown and Mirriam Maposa were dismayed to find that their results had been withheld due to irregularities.
Following subsequent investigations, Bruce Mugadhuwi was arrested on March 22, 2024. The court found him guilty, imposing a fine of US$150.
Mugadhuwi’s actions not only undermined the integrity of the examination process but also detrimentally affected the academic prospects of the students involved.
