Central Bakers and Millers Employees Steal 10 000 Bags of Maize

Two workers at Central Bakers and Millers, together with a companion, are accused of robbing their employer of ten 335 bags, each holding 50 kg of corn.

Edwin Mwale, 41, Tapera Zhuwau, 46, and Kudakwashe Murehwa, 46, appeared before Harare magistrate Mr. Dennis Mangosi yesterday to answer to accusations of stealing. They were placed under arrest till they made a bail application today.

Attorney Mr. Killian Mandiki is representing them.

Central Bakers and Millers is the complainant, and security officer Nelson Tom is representing them.

Mwale was responsible for acknowledging each delivery of corn made by the corporation, and Murehwa worked as a foreman, whose responsibilities included supervising staff members and managing the provided grain.

The primary focus of Central Bakers and Millers’ Kadoma farm is the production of maize, which is then shipped to the company by Zhuwau’s employer, Netombo Transport Logistics Company.

After this corn is delivered, Mwale and Murehwa are in charge of keeping it safe and supervised in a warehouse.

The prosecutor, Mr Rufaro Chonzi, said that the two workers took 9 735 bags under their supervision between May and July of last year, using their own vehicles to transfer the corn.

When a company stock take revealed the bags had been stolen, the crime was subsequently detected. Nothing was found to replace the US$ 163 061 worth of stolen property.

Regarding the other complaint, Zhuwau (46), together with Mwale (unknown), are accused of defrauding Central Bakers in July of last year by using Zhuwau’s Freightliner truck to load 600 bags with false information.

Mwale then sent a false message to his employer on the official WhatsApp group of the company, claiming to have received the maize cargo, in an attempt to conceal the offence.

Consequently, the claimant incurred a real loss of US$10,050 and received no compensation.
