Prominent opposition figure Chalton Hwende has publicly expressed profound regret regarding his involvement in attempts to revitalize the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) following the departure of its former leader, Nelson Chamisa.
Hwende characterized this decision as the most significant political misstep of his career.
In a recent statement, Hwende admitted that his strong desire to preserve the CCC as a foundational institution had compromised his judgment. This led him to endorse a rotational leadership model among the party’s vice presidents. He stated, “In my political journey, the biggest mistake I ever made was my decision to try and revive the CCC under a rotational presidency by the vice presidents after the departure of Nelson Chamisa.”
Hwende further elaborated that he had initially believed the party could overcome the leadership void. However, he now views that assessment as misguided. “I was blinded by my desire to keep the CCC as an institution, but at this stage, the mistake I made was to assume that the CCC could be redeemed. This was a mistake, and I must apologise,” he confessed.
He also alluded to an unexpected degree of infiltration within opposition politics, which he found shocking, though he refrained from providing specific details. “The level of infiltration in opposition politics shocked me, and this is a discussion for another day,” he remarked.
These comments emerge several months after Chamisa’s announcement of his exit from the CCC, attributing his departure to what he described as infiltration and the hijacking of the party. The political landscape in Zimbabwe’s opposition has since undergone significant changes, with various factions pursuing distinct strategies and organizational structures.
Hwende’s candid remarks are anticipated to reignite discussions concerning the future trajectory of the opposition, the inherent challenges confronting political parties in Zimbabwe, and ongoing endeavors to forge a unified alternative in anticipation of future electoral contests.
While acknowledging what he termed a major political miscalculation, Hwende emphasized the importance of publicly admitting his error and apologizing for his role in the unsuccessful efforts to revive the party, thereby contributing to broader dialogues surrounding CCC restructuring and the dynamics of Zimbabwe’s opposition.
