A Chinese mine supervisor who filmed himself pointing a gun at an upset worker demanding unpaid wages has been arrested, according to police reports on Thursday.
The worker, identified as 38-year-old Kholwani Dube, has also been arrested for stabbing Liu Haifeng during the incident on January 21 at Bijou Farm in Gweru.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that Haifeng faces charges of pointing a firearm, while Dube is charged with assault for stabbing Haifeng in the leg.
Haifeng is a supervisor at the mine owned by Ming Chang Sino-Africa Mining Investments.
The company stated that Dube had been suspended for ignoring his supervisors’ orders when he drove an excavator towards Haifeng.
In a video of the confrontation circulating online, Dube can be heard repeatedly shouting, “I want my money,” indicating that the dispute was over unpaid wages.
Another video shows Dube lying face down while being restrained by at least three Chinese men, one of whom is kneeling on his back and holding a gun to his head.
The videos have sparked widespread outrage online, highlighting a pattern of reported mistreatment of local workers by Chinese employers, particularly in the mining industry.
