Chinese National Arrested Over Fatal Shooting at Mutoko Mine

If He Was a Gangster, Why Pay? – Chinese Mine’s Secret $6,500 Settlement Sparks Fury

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of a Chinese national following the fatal shooting of a Zimbabwean man at a mine in Mutoko early Thursday morning.

According to a police statement, Quijun Yu (43) allegedly shot Fungai Nhau (36) at Makosa Mine around 2 AM on 9 October 2025. The ZRP said investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The ZRP is investigating the circumstances under which a foreign national, Quijun Yu (43), shot Fungai Nhau (36) at a mine in Makosa on 09/10/25 at around 0200 hours.
It is alleged that the foreign national was on duty when several people attacked the Boiler/Carbon room, resulting in the shooting. The suspect has since been arrested,” read the police statement.

In a separate statement, China Zhuhe Mining described Nhau as part of a group that allegedly raided the mine shortly after midnight. The company claimed that a Chinese engineer on duty fired warning shots to disperse the alleged intruders and that Nhau’s body was discovered about a kilometre away from the scene.

However, the incident has triggered widespread outrage and demands for transparency. Former opposition legislator Fadzayi Mahere took to X (formerly Twitter), calling on authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.

“The company’s statement raises serious questions. If only warning shots were fired, how did someone end up dead?
Why did the company take the law into its own hands instead of calling the police?
And why was there a seven-hour delay in reporting the incident despite shots being fired?” Mahere wrote.

She also questioned conflicting reports suggesting the deceased might have been a worker rather than a “gangster,” as claimed by the mining firm. Mahere urged the ZRP to fulfill its constitutional duty and bring all responsible parties to justice.
