Masvingo | Zimbabweans around the world have blasted Zimbabwean musicians for snubbing a fellow artist’s funeral despite posting pictures with him on social media.
Fellow musicians were quick to post pictures with Garry Mapanzure showing the world that they indeed worked with him but all of them failed to come to Maasvingo and burry the youngster.
Out of hundreds of musicians only Hillzy pitched up for the funeral coming all the way from South Africa where he is based.
Yesterday afternoon, hundreds of people from many walks of life gathered in Morningside, Masvingo, to pay their final respects to the beloved local Afro-pop musician, Garikai Munashe Mapanzure, also known as “Garry.”
After suffering injuries in a car collision on the Beitbridge-Masvingo Highway last Friday, Mapanzure passed away.
He was twenty-five. The late musician was laid to rest in Masvingo’s Loan Cemetery, where fans, family, business leaders, schoolchildren, and other artists were present.
Those who were unable to travel to Masvingo were able to watch the funeral live on E & T’s social media page. Seeing Garry’s mother, Mai Guvheya, grieving and seeing her son’s body in a coffin for the very last time was heartbreaking.
She began to sing some of her son’s song “Pindirai” and prayed to God to help her through this trying moment. Permit me to say a few things about my son as a mother. “I can’t go back to what transpired, as my husband already mentioned,” she sobbed. It’s a trying and depressing moment. Garikai, I’m shocked at how many individuals have come to pay their final respects at this age—25 years old. Everyone felt uplifted by his music.
“I wish I had more to say, but I want to thank the Lord for blessing me with a son who was adored by all.” May God step in.
Although her son’s death was God’s will, she expressed hope for him.
I pray to God and ask him why. We had no idea he had so many pals when we gave birth to him. I appreciate God and I dread him because Garikai’s gift has helped everyone, including me,” the woman remarked.
“I am relieved that he is no longer among us. Even though we can’t comprehend it, God had a purpose for everything. Thomas TJ is the grandson he left me. I am grateful to Vimbai, Garry’s widow.
Other friends and family members spoke eulogies at the event.
The late musician was honoured when the Kyle College Choir performed a song in his honour.
