HARARE – Discovery Ambulance Services has reaffirmed its commitment to providing a professional and dependable emergency medical response across Zimbabwe, even as the private provider faces resistance from critics of its new partnership with the Harare City Council.
The company, widely credited with enhancing pre-hospital emergency care standards, continues to be a vital lifeline for communities while actively contributing to the overall advancement of the nation’s health system.
### **Government Pledges Full Support**
The collaboration between Discovery Ambulance Services and the Harare City Council has received strong backing from senior government officials. Dr. Douglas Mombeshora, the Minister of Health and Child Care, lauded the partnership as a “progressive and strategic initiative that will protect lives and reinforce our healthcare sector.”
Minister Mombeshora urged other private organizations to follow suit by working hand-in-hand with the government to improve service delivery in the health sector. “This is the kind of partnership that accelerates progress and serves every citizen. We welcome those willing to make meaningful contributions to our healthcare system,” he stated.
Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume also threw his weight behind the initiative, noting that Discovery’s arrival was perfectly timed to address the city’s urgent need for improved emergency medical services. “Discovery Ambulance Services has come in at a decisive moment. Their presence boosts our city’s ability to act swiftly and effectively during emergencies,” Mafume commented.
David Munowenyu, the founder and CEO of Discovery, assured the public that his company’s core mission to save lives remains unwavering.
“Our mission is to serve the people. We will continue this work until we see a modern, industrialised Zimbabwe,” he declared.
Munowenyu acknowledged that a few individuals, described as being “opposed to progress,” were attempting to discredit the initiative. However, he stressed that the company remains focused on tangible outcomes that strengthen emergency healthcare delivery.
“Criticism will not stop us. We are determined to expand services, enhance resilience, and ensure that every community has access to a timely emergency response,” he added.
The joint program with Harare City Council is being viewed as a significant step in modernizing urban health services. Discovery Ambulance Services emphasized that such collaborative efforts should be seen as part of the country’s broader health transformation agenda, rather than being politicized.
The government, under the leadership of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has actively encouraged public-private partnerships (PPPs) with innovative service providers to strengthen infrastructure and service delivery. Discovery has positioned itself as a critical player in this national strategy, offering rapid response units, advanced medical equipment, and highly skilled professionals to support national health goals.
For many Zimbabweans, Discovery’s role goes beyond simple patient transport—it represents a lifeline and a tool for community empowerment, contributing directly to the Vision 2030 target of building a prosperous and industrialized nation.
Discovery Ambulance Services reiterated its readiness to partner with all stakeholders who prioritize public health over political interests. The company’s long-term vision includes expanding its national coverage, investing in cutting-edge medical technologies, and ensuring that no emergency call goes unanswered.
With unified support from the central government, local authorities, and the private sector, Discovery Ambulance Services is solidifying its position as a vital partner in Zimbabwe’s journey toward a safer, healthier, and more modern future.
