Doek and Slay Sparks Debate Over Male-Dominated Performances at Women-Only Events

Although attendance at the popular Doek and Slay event is exclusively for women, there have been questions raised about why most of the performances feature male artists.

The Doek and Slay concept has been gaining popularity with each event, despite some incidents that have marred previous gigs.

The recent event was held in Mutare, featuring headline acts EXQ and Killer T, while the most successful event at Alex Sports Club in Harare showcased male performers such as Freeman, Killer T, and Ex Q.

This has led to questions about why the organizers do not feature female performers exclusively, given the presence of talented artists like Feli Nandi, Tamy Moyo, Fungisai, Dorcas Moyo, and Selmor Mtukudzi-Manatsa, among others.

Additionally, there are numerous female DJs in the country.

The organizer of Doek and Slay recently addressed why male artists are predominant at the shows.

“The ladies choose the artists they want to see, and we are here to meet their demands.

“It’s not about whether it’s a male or female artist performing; the events are designed for ladies to enjoy themselves.

“We are bringing artists who usually perform in nightclubs. These events provide a chance for women to have a good time in a comfortable environment.

“While we aim to feature more female artists, it’s challenging because the ladies decide who they want to see perform.”

The event made its way to Mutare on Sunday, offering the town’s women a taste of this ladies-only show that is rapidly gaining popularity across the country.

Dressed in denim, white tops, and a touch of a doek, the attendees embodied the theme, as seen in a video circulating on social media.

The event organizers also explained why the same artists from the Harare show were featured in Mutare.

“The reason we rotate the same artists is to ensure consistency and avoid complaints from the women.

“We want to make sure that when an artist performs in Harare, they also perform in other cities.

“We had a great time; the ladies in Mutare know how to turn up,” said the organizer.

The next event will take place at Caravan Park in Masvingo this weekend.

Feli Nandi and Enzo Ishall are set to entertain the thousands of women expected to attend the show.

The ladies are encouraged to dress in the slay code, which includes hot pink, lime green, or royal blue doeks paired with shades.
