US President-elect Donald Trump has announced that Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and owner of X (formerly Twitter), will team up with former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to co-lead a newly established department in his administration.
This new office, called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), will be tasked with reducing government bureaucracy, eliminating excessive regulations, cutting unnecessary spending, and restructuring federal agencies in alignment with Trump’s campaign promise to overhaul the US government. The department is a key part of Trump’s broader “Save America Movement,” which aims to revamp and streamline government operations.
Trump, who received Musk’s endorsement during his election campaign, explained that the creation of DOGE aligns with long-standing Republican goals to reform the federal system. The president-elect noted that the department will bring in outside perspectives to help facilitate large-scale government reforms.
“This department will guide us in driving transformative change,” Trump said in a statement. “It will work closely with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to introduce a more entrepreneurial approach to governance, making the US government more accountable to its people.”
The two men will focus on reducing the size of the government and making it more efficient, with the goal of completing their reforms by July 4, 2026—the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Trump expressed confidence in their success, saying that a leaner, more efficient government would be a fitting tribute to America on this milestone anniversary.
