Dr. Guramatunhu Hosts Sofar Harare’s 21st Concert Celebrating Natural Hair and African Identity

Renowned eye specialist Dr. Solomon Guramatunhu opened the doors of his Harare residence to art lovers on Saturday, as it was transformed into a vibrant cultural hub for Sofar Harare’s 21st edition, themed The Natural Hair Edition.

The intimate gathering celebrated African pride, authenticity, and natural beauty through an inspiring blend of music, poetry, and dance.

Women flaunting their natural crowns — from afros to curls, locs, and coils — filled the venue, perfectly reflecting the evening’s theme of embracing natural hair and identity.

The performances carried the night with a mix of genres and creative expression. SkyBlue & Act warmed up the audience with soulful guitar-backed vocals, followed by poet Tadana Nakai, whose words struck a powerful chord with attendees. CXXVII & Ngonie then captivated the crowd with a striking fusion of spoken word and dance. The stage also welcomed Mokoomba’s guitarist, Trust Samende, whose artistry drew much admiration, before Afro-fusion songstress Mary Anibal closed with a moving set that blended Zimbabwean and Mozambican influences.

In his remarks, Dr. Guramatunhu encouraged guests to appreciate their natural hair and reject imposed beauty ideals, a sentiment that resonated throughout the night.

The concert enjoyed backing from several wellness and beauty brands, including Optinova Eye Care Zimbabwe, Au Naturale Natural Hair Salon, BirdsNest, Mashonga Roots, African Crown, and AfroKink.

As part of the global Sofar Sounds movement — which held shows in Bangalore, Bali, Dehradun, Bombay, and Plymouth over the same weekend — the Harare event not only spotlighted fresh talent but also emphasized the power of art in affirming cultural heritage and identity.
