Dzivarasekwa Accident Driver Remanded in Custody Over Eight Deaths

Harare, Zimbabwe | A commuter omnibus driver, accused of causing a tragic accident in Dzivarasekwa last week that claimed the lives of eight people, has been remanded in custody after the State opposed his bail application.

Gaylord Hunda (27), represented by Stanley Matandadzi, appeared before Mbare Magistrate Batsirai Madzingira on a charge of culpable homicide.

Hunda’s bail application will be heard again tomorrow, with the court set to deliver its ruling.

The State alleges that on March 19, 2025, Hunda was driving a Toyota Hiace omnibus along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway, heading towards the city center. At an intersection, Hunda is said to have failed to yield to oncoming traffic from the right. In an attempt to avoid a collision, he swerved left, striking a parked truck and hitting a person standing by the road.

Further allegations claim that a truck coming from the right collided with Hunda’s omnibus, leading to the death of eight people.
