Edina Phiri (left) and Elizabeth Togara appear before a Harare magistrate facing allegations of stealing clothing worth US$1,450 from a CBD shop.

Two Epworth women, Edina Phiri (39) and Elizabeth Togara, have appeared in court facing allegations of stealing clothes worth US$1,450 from a Central Business District (CBD) clothing shop owned by Rosemary Tendai Machana.

The duo, who were allegedly captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV), were granted US$150 bail each by Harare magistrate Mrs Ruth Moyo.

According to the State, the offences occurred between December 7 and December 9, 2025, at Shop 21, Advern House, located at the corner of Innez Terrace and Robert Mugabe Road in Harare.

Prosecutors allege that on December 7, the two accused entered Machana’s shop and stole various clothing items by concealing them in the changing room. They reportedly paid only for three vests valued at US$10 each before leaving the premises.

The court heard that the pair returned to the shop on December 8, where they allegedly stole more clothes and paid only for two T-shirts costing US$10 each.

On December 9, Mrs Machana reportedly noticed that several pairs of jeans were missing from her shop. She reviewed CCTV footage, which allegedly showed Phiri and Togara—who were known to the shop’s sales staff—stealing merchandise.

The footage reportedly captured the accused stealing 36 men’s jeans, 33 jean shorts, and 15 ladies’ boyfriend jeans, all valued at US$1,450.

A report was subsequently made to the police, leading to the arrest of the two accused.
