Dali Mpofu, the former chairperson of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has announced his departure from the party, revealing that he will be joining the MK Party, led by former President Jacob Zuma.
In an interview with SABC Morning Live, Mpofu expressed his disappointment with the Government of National Unity (GNU), describing it as a betrayal of South Africa’s liberation struggle. He explained that the MK Party aligned more closely with his personal values and his passion for national unity.
“The MK Party has consistently promoted unity—true black and progressive unity. I believe real liberation will be achieved through the MK Party,” Mpofu said.
Mpofu Reflects on His Political Journey
Mpofu, who has a long history in South African politics, said he had spent a lot of time reflecting on his decision. He noted that while he had been part of the ANC for three years and served with the EFF for 11 years, he felt the MK Party now offered a broader vision for decolonisation and unity.
“I don’t believe in staying loyal to just one party. For now, the MK Party offers a more inclusive platform for advancing national and progressive unity,” he explained.
Asked why he chose to leave the EFF for the MK Party, Mpofu responded, “We need to take the shortest route toward achieving unity.” He also made it clear that his decision had nothing to do with the recent defection of EFF leader Floyd Shivambu, who also joined the MK Party.
Mpofu emphasized that his EFF membership had expired, allowing him the freedom to make this announcement without any obligations to the party
