Eight students at Matoranhembe Primary School in Murombedzi, Zvimba District, Mashonaland West Province, fell ill on Friday due to suspected food poisoning.
It is alleged that a parent intentionally poisoned the rice and soup and instructed her daughter on how to distribute the food.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident on Sunday, stating that the learners began vomiting and complained of stomach pains after eating rice and soup from a lunchbox. He said:
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reports that investigations are underway in connection with a case of suspected food poisoning which occurred at Matoranhembe Primary School, Murombedzi on June 7, 2024.

Eight pupils allegedly started vomiting while complaining of stomach pains after consuming rice and soup from a lunchbox. The pupils were taken to Murombedzi Rural Hospital for treatment.
Investigations revealed that a fellow student brought the lunchbox containing the home-prepared food, having been given two lunchboxes by her parent, who instructed her on how to share the food.”
Comm. Nyathi added that more information will be provided as the police investigation continues.
