“Every Day Feels Like Hell”: Convicted Woman Shares Regret and Road to Healing

A woman currently serving a 30-year prison sentence for murder has shared with H-Metro how deeply she now feels the weight of her actions. Tendayi Muskwe, 32, described her crime as a moment of madness that led her to take another person’s life—something she now deeply regrets.

Tendayi said that reading the Bible during her incarceration has changed her perspective. She has come to realize that, no matter how dire the situation, taking someone’s life is never justified. She also expressed how much she misses her two children.

Now four years into her sentence, Tendayi reflected on how difficult prison life has been.

“Prison life is hard,” she said. “Every day feels like hell, being separated from my children and family. The pain is both physical and emotional. I regret letting my emotions take over. I used to struggle with understanding the Bible, but now I’ve found clarity.”

She described the prison experience as feeling like an eternity, even when only a day passes. Tendayi also emphasized the value of education, suggesting that a lack of it contributed to the poor choices that landed her in prison.

“Family Week gave me a chance to reconnect with my children, but when schools reopen, it’s like the wound is reopened,” she said.

She expressed gratitude to the rehabilitation officers for their support, noting that their efforts are helping inmates find hope and direction.

Tendayi spoke to H-Metro during the Continental Online Chess Championship Tournament held at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison, where she was a member of the winning women’s team.
