An ex-prison officer is facing serious charges after allegedly appointing herself as the executor of a multi-million-dollar estate belonging to Brian James Rhodes, a descendant of colonial figure Cecil John Rhodes.
Elizabeth Parirenyatwa Mucheche, who has no legal or familial connection to Rhodes, appeared before Harare Magistrate Dennis Mangosi, who remanded her in custody. She was not required to enter a plea at this stage.
The State has requested that the case proceed under the Mental Health Act, citing concerns about Mucheche’s mental stability. Magistrate Mangosi has instructed that Mucheche be assessed by two mental health professionals before her next remand hearing.
Mucheche is accused of forging a power of attorney, which she claimed was signed by Anne Rhodes, the widow of Brian James Rhodes, who passed away in 2006. The document, however, was signed after Anne’s death, providing clear evidence of its fraudulent nature.
Additionally, Mucheche is accused of threatening Brian Murphy, an individual who reported the fraudulent activity, allegedly telling him she would kill him for causing her arrest.
State prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawo is handling the case.
