Fatal Beitbridge Road Accident Claims 11 Lives

The death toll resulting from the tragic road accident in Beitbridge on Saturday has now climbed to 11, with two additional passengers succumbing to their injuries in the hospital.

The fatal incident occurred when a City Bus coach, en route from South Africa to Harare, swerved into the opposite lane after colliding with a donkey, leading to a head-on collision with a Blue Circle bus.

Of the initial nine fatalities, seven individuals lost their lives at the scene, while two more passed away upon arrival at Beitbridge District Hospital.

In response to the tragedy, both the Government and bus operators have pledged to provide support to the affected families, covering medical expenses and funeral arrangements.

Confirming the latest casualties, Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, Dr. Evelyn Ndlovu, visited survivors admitted to United Bulawayo Hospital (UBH) and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.

Dr. Ndlovu emphasized the Government’s commitment to assisting survivors and bereaved families, noting the active involvement of bus operators in providing financial support for medical bills and funeral costs.

Acknowledging the efficient care provided by medical staff, Dr. Ndlovu underscored the importance of collaboration between healthcare professionals and bus operators in ensuring comprehensive support for the victims.

Representatives from Blue Circle and City Bus expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the accident, pledging to extend assistance to affected families and support ongoing efforts for the survivors’ recovery.

Nicholas Gowo, Blue Circle’s operations manager, highlighted the company’s commitment to covering all associated costs, while Sam Matanda, operations manager for City Bus, reiterated their dedication to providing aid in any way possible during this tragic time.
