FC Wangu Mazodze City Suspended from ZIFA League

FC Wangu Mazodze

The ZIFA Central Region Soccer League has suspended FC Wangu Mazodze City after the team from Kwekwe failed to honor three consecutive fixtures. The club’s financial difficulties escalated after the withdrawal of sponsorship from U.S.-based Richard Wangu Mazodze, who also owns another team, FC Wangu Mazodze, in the Eastern Region Soccer League.

It’s important to note that FC Wangu Mazodze City and FC Wangu Mazodze are separate entities playing in different divisions.

The official suspension letter cited the club’s inability to fulfill its obligations, stating that FC Wangu Mazodze City has been stripped of its membership rights and will no longer participate in league competitions from September 29, 2024.

The club’s head coach, Isaac Nyabvure, recently expressed his frustrations with the administration, attributing the team’s struggles to financial issues that have affected player welfare and preparation. After a narrow 1-0 defeat to Sheasham FC, Nyabvure pointed out that the players had performed well despite limited resources.

On August 15, 2024, the Dr. RW Mazodze Family Trust withdrew its support for FC Wangu Mazodze City, citing the club’s failure to meet reporting obligations and established targets. A statement from the trust clarified that while they had sponsored the club out of passion for football, they never held ownership and would now focus on their other team, FC Wangu Mazodze, which is currently leading the Eastern Region Soccer League.

In a surprising development, Mazodze, who is aiming for the ZIFA presidency, named his 8-year-old son as the new Assistant Team Manager of FC Wangu Mazodze, as the club continues its push for promotion to the Premier Soccer League.
