This week, the South African Revenue Service (SARS), along with several law enforcement agencies, conducted a major raid at the La Lucia mansion of businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize.
During the operation, authorities reportedly seized over 40 firearms, a large amount of ammunition, and luxury vehicles from Mkhize’s properties in Durban, Pietermaritzburg, and Johannesburg.
SARS spokesperson Siphithi Sibeko informed the Sunday Tribune that a complete list of the seized items has not yet been finalized. However, a well-placed source shared important details of the raid with the publication.
The source revealed that Mkhize claimed the firearms were not hers but belonged to a security company run by a taxi boss involved in long-distance taxi services at the Durban Station taxi rank.
However, the source pointed out that the company’s registered address is in Coastlands, while the unlicensed firearms were discovered at Mkhize’s La Lucia residence. The seized firearms included rifles, shotguns, and handguns, along with approximately 2,000 rounds of ammunition. Ballistic tests are currently being conducted by the Durban North SAPS.
A security guard was also arrested on Tuesday for attempting to conceal six firearms under sheets, further highlighting the severity of the situation. Due to taxpayer confidentiality laws, the exact amount Mkhize owes in taxes has not been revealed.
Known to the public as Mam’Mkhize, she has been in the spotlight throughout the week due to the raid, adding to her ongoing dispute with tax authorities. This raid follows a preservation order granted by the Durban High Court, which allowed SARS, the South African Police Service, and the Hawks to search and seize assets from Mkhize’s multi-million-rand La Lucia property.
Several of Mkhize’s high-value assets have been attached, including luxury vehicles, her football club Royal AM FC, and the Shandi Trust, as authorities continue their efforts to recover outstanding tax payments.
A video circulating on social media showed luxury cars linked to Mkhize, including a Mercedes-Benz Maybach, BMW X4 or X6, Mercedes-Benz AMG G63, Toyota Hilux Legend 50, and a Mercedes-Benz Z-Class being towed away.
Despite her significant social media presence, particularly on Instagram with 3.6 million followers, Mkhize has not posted anything since the Monday before the raid, suggesting the seriousness of the situation.
