Former FC Barcelona and Paris St. Germain footballer Dani Alves, convicted of rape, requested bail on Tuesday while awaiting a decision on his appeal. His legal team proposed posting a 50,000 euro ($54,000) bail or surrendering his two passports to ensure he would stay in Spain.
During a closed-door hearing in a Barcelona court, Alves’ lawyer argued that the player had already served a quarter of his sentence since he had been in custody since January 2023, according to legal sources.
Alves was sentenced to four and a half years in prison in February. The 40-year-old was found guilty by a Spanish court of raping a woman in a nightclub in Barcelona in December 2022.
Speaking via videoconference from prison, Alves assured judges that he had no intention of fleeing and expressed confidence in the justice system. However, prosecutors opposed his request, citing concerns that he posed a high risk of flight.
