Former Harare City Deputy Mayor Kudzie Kadzombe has brought to light a startling case of illegal gold mining taking place in a residential area of Harare.
During her investigation, she found a substantial pit on a property in Marlborough, where individuals had been clandestinely digging tunnels in search of gold.
“I was shocked to receive a report about gold mining happening in one of the residential properties in Marlborough, I went on site and ‘lo & behold’ the workers were busy at work saying they were digging a well. I personally dint believe it & reported them too EMA @nelsonchamisa ,” she said.
This alarming discovery has raised significant concerns about safety and legality within the community.
It underscores the growing issue of illegal mining activities encroaching on residential areas, a problem not unique to Harare.

For instance, last year, fourteen students were injured at Globe and Phoenix Primary School when a classroom collapsed into a mine shaft.
The incident occurred in Kwekwe, where the classroom fell due to unsafe underground mining practices that are reportedly being conducted by influential individuals.
